What is an ISRC Code and what is it used for?

The International Standard Recording Code, commonly known as an ISRC code, is a unique identifier assigned to individual sound recordings.

This alphanumeric code acts as a unique digital fingerprint for your music.

It’s important to note an ISRC code identifies a specific recording, not the composition, so re-mixes of a track for example, should have a new ISRC code assigned.

What is it used for?

It’s used to globally monitor track usage, royalty collection, preventing piracy, maintaining accurate metadata and data tracking, which essentially means you get paid!

Do I need one?

Yes, definitely if you are releasing commercial music.

How do I get an ISRC Code??

When you distribute your music through a digital distributor you are generally allocated a free code.

Securing an ISRC code is a straightforward process. Generally, these codes are obtained through authorized agencies that have been appointed by the International ISRC Agency (IFPI).

These agencies will guide you through the application process, ensuring that your codes are assigned accurately and in compliance with international standards.
